PAM HAMILTON: MENAGERIE OF DREAMS
Honoring the Legacy of the Kelly Bros. Winter Circus: Perspectives Art Gallery Presents Pam Hamilton’s ‘Menagerie of Dreams’
Petersburg, Illinois, has long been home to a rich and vibrant history, and among its most fascinating chapters is the legacy of the Kelly Bros. Winter Circus. For decades, the Kelly Circus and other renowned troupes called Petersburg their winter home, perfecting their performances in the historic Ring Barn. These performers, whose acts dazzled audiences across the country, were the celebrities of their time, bringing wonder and excitement to every town they visited.
The Kelly Circus was more than just an attraction—it was a way of life for many Petersburg families. By the early 1900s, nearly a hundred Petersburg residents performed in various traveling circuses, showcasing their incredible talents on trapezes, tightropes, and even atop rolling globes. Among them was Kitty Kelly, an iconic performer known for her astonishing balancing act. She captivated audiences as she walked atop a large globe, rolling it up and down a teeter-totter while trained white doves landed gracefully on her outstretched arms.
This legacy of artistry, playfulness, and resilience serves as the inspiration for ‘Menagerie of Dreams,’ the latest solo exhibition by celebrated artist Pam Hamilton at Perspectives Art Gallery. The show, opening this Saturday, March 1, at noon, pays homage to the whimsy and brilliance of the Kelly Circus while expanding into a world of imagination and empowerment. Hamilton, known for her expressive and dynamic compositions, has created several pieces featuring imagery inspired by the Kelly Circus, launching her entire show from this foundation of fun, theatricality, and bold storytelling.
One of the most special highlights of the exhibition is ‘Balancing Act,’ Pam Hamilton’s tribute to Kitty Kelly’s famous rolling globe performance. This stunning piece, on loan from Jan Costello, Kitty Kelly’s granddaughter, captures the grace, strength, and charisma of the pioneering women who made the circus a spectacular success.
While the Kelly Circus serves as a launching point, the rest of Hamilton’s ‘Menagerie of Dreams’ takes viewers on a journey beyond the past and into a world of playfulness, power, and mystery. Her signature style brings to life strong, otherworldly women, expressive figures, and lively scenes that celebrate movement, magic, and adventure. The exhibition invites audiences to embrace the joy of spectacle, the thrill of performance, and the enduring spirit of those who shaped Petersburg’s artistic heritage.
The opening reception on March 1 will include an Artist Talk and Q&A session at 2:00 PM, where Pam Hamilton will share insights into her creative process and the historical influences behind her work. The exhibition will run through March 29, 2025, at Perspectives Art Gallery, 112 S. 6th Street, Petersburg, IL.
Don’t miss this chance to experience a stunning fusion of history and imagination. Join us this Saturday to celebrate the legacy of the Kelly Circus and the dreamlike worlds of Pam Hamilton’s ‘Menagerie of Dreams.’
